Making Salesforce Work for SDRs

Posted by Matt Bertuzzi on Thu, Mar 16, 2017

Do your SDRs often remark about how much they love using Salesforce? Do they feel bad for peers at other companies with poorly configured CRMs? Are they thankful that, unlike those poor sods, they aren’t drowning in manual steps and byzantine processes.

I suspect this isn’t a sentiment you hear very often.

I’ve asked dozens of SDRs to describe the experience of doing their jobs inside Salesforce. The responses ranged from “death by a thousand cuts” to “running in mud wearing cement shoes” to “sitting in the dentist’s chair five days a week.” I once heard “it’s fine” and considered that rather high praise indeed.

For all the attention and buzz the SDR role has received, the way companies support sales development in Salesforce hasn’t advanced much in the last 10 years. Where AE, managers, and senior leaders have been drowning in innovation and improvement, SDRs have been logging clicks and filling fields in ways that would be entirely familiar to a time traveler from 2008.

So I wrote a book about fixing it.

Lightning Sales Ops was just released. I interviewed 34 sales executives, SDR leaders, marketers, operations pros, and Salesforce admins for this book. I hope the stories, strategies, and thinking I share will inspire you.

It's a book for SDR managers and biz ops / marketing ops / sales ops pros. It’s a book with five parts:

The New Hotness: SalesforceIQ for Sales Cloud

Posted by Matt Bertuzzi on Wed, Oct 07, 2015

Like many of you, I’m finally recovering from the one-two punch of Dreamforce ’15 and the end of Q3.

Now that my head is above water, I want to highlight one Dreamforce product launch you might have missed: SalesforceIQ for Sales Cloud. I’ve been playing with the app for a few weeks and am totally blown away.

What it is

SalesforceIQ for Sales Cloud is both a mobile email client (iOS and Android devices) and a Chrome browser extension.  The product marketing promises:  sell smarter right from inbox. They aren’t kidding. It is part email open tracker, part cloud calendar scheduler, part Salesforce integration, and part automated assistant.

How it works

I shot a quick video walk-thru to give you a feel for the app.

Lead Response Arms Race: Ready, Fire, Aim.

Posted by Trish Bertuzzi on Thu, Oct 02, 2014

Lead response time is a hot topic lately.

Companies have published research highlighting findings such as ‘calling inbound leads in under a minute delivers 3-4X conversion rates’ and ‘calling within 5 minutes vs. 30 minutes drops the odds of qualifying by 21X.’

I believe those studies are well done and their findings are true. But the question remains: for those of us with fairly complex B2B sales processes, do they matter

My hypothesis is that contact and conversion rates rarely equal quality of conversation (and ultimately revenue). I see two big problems in our rush to make contact.

Twitter for Sales Reps: Big Hat - No Cattle

Posted by Trish Bertuzzi on Wed, Sep 04, 2013

"Big hat and no cattle” (or “all hat and no cattle")
(US, idiomatic) Full of big talk but lacking action, power, or substance;
Apr. 25, 1981 Globe & Mail ‘One of the major raps against him was that he was all hat and no cattle. That is, he had a lot of style but not much substance.’
